[Professional Experience]
Thomas P. Mannion has developed a reputation as one of the nation’s top catastrophic injury defense trial lawyers. He has successfully taken to trial cases involving cerebral palsy, ventilator dependent quadriplegia, paraplegia, traumatic brain injury, severe burns, and death. His abilities and proven track record in the courtroom have resulted in some of the world’s largest companies and insurers calling him to defend their most serious cases in the most notorious jurisdictions. Tom has parachuted into and defended catastrophic injury cases throughout the nation, including Florida, New York, Missouri, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Minnesota, West Virginia, Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Michigan, and Ohio.
Prior to co-founding Mannion & Gray, Tom was the co-managing partner of a regional branch of a large Ohio law firm and Vice President and founding partner of another Ohio litigation firm. While Tom's early career focused on medical malpractice, medical device, product liability, and pharmaceutical and herbal products, his practice has expanded to include catastrophic injury defense of transportation cases, construction accidents, fire and explosion related incidents, railroad derailments, railway explosions, and industrial accidents of all types. Tom’s practice has also evolved to include litigation concerning insurance bad faith, employment practices, and director’s liability. In addition, Tom’s prior experience as a Systems Analyst and Computer Programmer at an international manufacturing and distribution company has provided him the ideal complement to his trial experience in defending the design and development of medical device computer software. Tom has also developed the confidence of international insurance companies in handling their bad faith litigation.
Tom graduated summa cum laude from the University of Akron School of Law in 1993. A two-time Regional Champion and Outstanding Advocate in the Sixth Circuit trial advocacy competitions, Tom's mock trial team advanced to the National Finals two years in a row, finishing second in the nation. He has published articles in state medical journals, published a law review article entitled "The Constitutionality of Punitive Damages,” and is a frequent lecturer at risk management and continuing legal education seminars. Recently, Tom conducted a seminar on the interpretation of fetal heart rate monitor strips for an OB collaborative held in Cincinnati.
